Findings
Orthogonal radiographs of the thorax are available for interpretation.
There is moderate enlargement of the right side of the cardiac silhouette. The main pulmonary artery and pulmonary lobar arteries are markedly distended while the veins remain normal in size.
Numerous, variably sized, soft tissue opaque nodules are seen throughout the lungs, in some regions coalescing. An alveolar pattern is seen in a smaller portion of the ventral middle lung fields.
Diagnosis
- Right-sided cardiomegaly with severe pulmonary arterial distension is most concerning for heartworm disease. Other causes of pulmonary hypertension remain possible.
- The pulmonary infiltrates may be secondary to heartworm infectious (eosinophilic infiltrates.
Discussion
Both caudal lobar pulmonary arteries: Green and Red
Main pulmonary artery: Blue
Right-sided cardiac enlargement: Yellow
