Findings
Orthogonal radiographs of the abdomen are available for interpretation.
The patient has a thin body condition, with tenting of the skin dorsal to the spinous processes. The serosal detail is normal considering the body condition score.
There is a markedly enlarged small intestinal segment within the mid to caudal abdomen, and this segment contains heterogenous fluid/soft tissue opaque material with numerous pinpoint mineral foci. This markedly enlarged small intestinal segment is causing cranial and dorsal deviation of the remaining intestines. The remainder of the small intestinal segments contain a small amount of gas and are normal in diameter.
The colon contains a small amount of gas and feces.
The stomach is normal. The live
r, spleen, unobscured margins of the kidneys, and urinary bladder are normal. There is mild diffuse osteopenia, with a course trabecular pattern to the imaged osseous structures.
Diagnosis
- The markedly dilated small intestinal segment likely represents a chronic partial mechanical obstruction, and could be due to an intestinal mass (such as secondary to neoplastic, inflammatory, or infectious etiologies). This is the primary consideration considering the age of the patient.
- Diffuse osteopenia, likely senile.
Discussion
The patient underwent an abdominal ultrasound which confirmed a mass which was circumferential at the level of the ileo-colic junction.
The owner elected to not perform any additional diagnosis or treatment.
