Publication Date: 2020-11-30
History
6 year old great Pyrenees. Ate a turkey carcass.

Findings
Opposite lateral and VD views obtained are available.
The serosal margin detail is normal.
The stomach is markedly gas distended and contains a moderate to marked amount of bone fragments. The pylorus is cranially and dorsally displaced. There is a small rim of gas identified paralleling the right craniolateral intraluminal gastric wall on the VD view.
The small intestines are diffusely moderately to markedly gas dilated. The spleen is located within the right caudolateral aspect of the abdomen.
The caudal vena cava is intermittently small. The urinary tract is obscured by superimposed gastrointestinal tract
Diagnosis
- Gastric dilatation and volvulus with multiple gastric foreign objects (bone fragments) resulting in pyloric outflow obstruction. The linear gas accumulation at the gastric wall may represent gastric pneumatosis. Diffusely gas dilated small intestines are likely secondary to gastric dilatation and volvulus. Surgery is recommended.
- Small caudal vena cava may be due to dehydration/hypovolemia or phase of respiratory/cardiac cycle.
Notes
