Case of the week 9.14.20
Publication Date: 2020-09-11
History
2 year old labrador retriever. Ingested some laundry detergent yesterday.

Findings
Orthogonal radiographs of the thorax are available for interpretation.
There is a severe alveolar pattern throughout the left cranial, left caudal and right middle lung lobes, with minimal aerated tissue in the left cranial lung. A patchy interstitial to alveolar pattern is also present throughout the remaining lung lobes. Air bronchograms can be seen superimposed with the cardiac silhouette in both lateral views. The remaining thoracic structures and imaged skeletal structures are normal. There is an incidental iatrogenic gas bubble over the apex of the heart on the left lateral projections.
Diagnosis
Severe aspiration pneumonia, most severely affecting the left hemithorax and right middle lung lobe. Given the history of detergent ingestion, a component of the changes could be secondary to chemical-induced irritation.
Discussion
The dog is currently being treated medically in ICU.
