Findings

Opposite lateral and VD radiographs of the abdomen.

There is mild decreased serosal detail throughout the mid and caudal abdomen. The stomach is mildly distended and contains lobular soft tissue opaque material that contains multiple very small mineral opaque structures throughout. There is marked bunching of the small intestines with multiple, short, abruptly tortuous, gas dilated segments creating “comma” or “paisley” shapes. Some segments of intestines contain heterogenous material with multiple mineral opaque foci. The colon diffusely contains fecal material. The liver, spleen, kidneys, and urinary bladder are normal. The caudal vena cava is undersized. There is incidental multifocal moderate spondylosis deformans. There is an incidental large cutaneous nodule associated with the right cranioventral abdomen.

Diagnosis

The appearance of the intestinal tract is consistent with a linear foreign body anchored in the pylorus and likely affecting a majority of the small intestines. There is suspect peritoneal effusion which may be inflammatory or septic. Surgery is recommended.

Discussion

The dog underwent abdominal surgery. A towel like structure was found anchored at the pylorus.
