Findings
Opposite lateral and VD views of the abdomen are available for interpretation.
The serosal margin detail is normal
The liver is mildly enlarged, extending beyond the costal arch with rounded caudal ventral margins. The spleen is mildly diffusely enlarged. The kidneys and urinary bladder are normal. The stomach and small intestine are within normal limits.
An ill-defined soft tissue opaque structure with a convex caudal margin measuring approximately 4.5 cm in length is seen within the lumen of the caudal aspect of the descending colon. The caudal margin of this structure is outlined by gas within the rectum. Formed granular fecal material is noted within the colon cranial to this structure.
There is the incidental finding of 8 lumbar vertebrae.
Diagnosis
- Large colonic wall mass is concerning for malignant neoplasia (such as adenocarcinoma) although a benign process (such as a polyp) cannot be entirely excluded. Ultrasound +/-tissue sampling could be performed for further evaluation.
- Mild hepatomegaly is nonspecific and may represent a benign process, such as vacuolar hepatopathy (of either steroidal or metabolic etiologies), hepatitis or diffuse neoplastic infiltration.
- Mild splenomegaly is nonspecific and may be secondary to sedation, may represent a benign process (such as extramedullary hematopoiesis or lymphoid hyperplasia) or may represent diffuse neoplastic infiltration.
- Incidental finding of 8 lumbar vertebrae.
Discussion
The dog underwent surgery after complete workup and the mass was resected. Colonic adenocarcinoma was confirmed.
