Quizz

  1. Which following statement is most accurate?

There is a splenic mass and associated hemoabdomen

    No :(
The dog ate a foreign body and is now mechanically obstructed

    No :(
There is a teratoma growing from the retroperitoneal space

    No :(
There is a renal mass and associated effusion

    Yes ! :)

Findings

Orthogonal radiographs of the abdomen are available for intepretation.

There is moderate decreased serosal detail of the mid and ventral peritoneal cavity with soft tissue streaking.

The left kidney is markedly enlarged and irregularly shaped with lobular margination. The right kidney is normal in shape and margination, however, is mildly enlarged at approximately 3.5x the length of L2.

There is a moderate amount of gas and granular soft tissue material within the stomach. The small intestines are normal in diameter and are mostly soft tissue opaque with a few segments containing gas. The colon diffusely contains a mixture of gas and fecal material.

The liver and spleen are normal. The margins of the urinary bladder cannot be clearly identified. The included musculoskeletal structures are normal.

Diagnosis

Findings are most consistent with a left renal mass such as renal cell carcinoma or other carcinoma.

The mild enlargement of the right kidney could be evidence of metastatic infiltration, patient variant, or compensatory hypertrophy.

Abdominal effusion could represent hemorrhage

Discussion

Upon abdominocentesis, blood was retrieved confirming the suspicion of hemoabdomen.

Based on the poor prognosis, the owners elected for humane euthanasia. Necropsy was declined.
