History

1 year old Macaw female. 2-3 weeks of hyporexia, weight loss

Findings

Orhtogonal radiographs of the whole body are available for interpretation.

There is marked diffuse gas dilation of the proventriculus. The patient has a very thin body condition.

The cardiac silhouette is undersized. The remaining structures are normal.

Diagnosis

Proventriculus dilatation disease (PDD), and secondary emaciation and/or dehydration.

Discussion

Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD) is a viral progressive and often fatal disease. It affects the autonomic portion of the gastrointestinal tract (myenteric plexus) and is due to an avian bornavirus.
