Findings

Within the thoracic cavity there is a moderate amount of pleural effusion as characterized by the presence of numerous pleural fissure lines, retraction of the lung parenchyma and border effacement of the cardiac silhouette. At the level of the 4th rib on the right side, centered on the costo-chondral junction, there is an expansile mixed lytic and proliferative osseous lesion. Within the pulmonary parenchyma there is no evidence of pulmonary metastasis radiographically. Incidentally there is a mild amount of ventral spondylosis noted.

Diagnosis

Primary rib neoplasia (ddx: osteosarcoma vs. fibrosarcoma) and secondary pleural effusion (ddx: reactive vs. neoplastic).

Pathology Report

Chondrosarcoma and associated neoplastic pleural effusion.
