Findings

Within the lateral trochlear ridge of the stifle, there is a oblong area of radiolucency which is irregular. This lesion is surrounded by a large amount of sclerosis. A intraarticular osseous fragment cannot be visualized. The remainder of the stifle is within normal limits radiographically.

Diagnosis

Osteochondrosis of the lateral trochlear ridge. Similar findings were noted on the right side.

FAQ

Radiographic signs of osteochondrosis include flattening, irregular subchondral surface, heterogeneous opacity of the trochlear ridge and possible presence of bony fragments. The most common site of osteochondrosis in the equine stifle is the lateral femoral trochlear ridge, especially the middle third. Both stifles should always be examined.
