Findings

Orthogonal thoracic radiographs are available for interpretation.

A relatively well-defined, irregular, mineral opacity is present in the region of the caudal esophagus (1.3 cm x 2.1 cm) on the initial projections. This opacity has a more opaque outline. Orad to this location, the esophagus is markedly gas dilated. A few tubular opacities are also seen in the region of the mid intrathoracic esophagus. No free air is seen within the mediastinum. The cardiovascular structures and pulmonary parenchyma are within normal limits for this patient. Irregular mineralization at the costochondral junctions is noted. The stomach contains moderate fluid. The intestines are within normal limits for size and contents. Serosal detail is adequate.

Impression: Esophageal foreign body as described with subsequent orad gas dilation. The tubular opacities may also represent foreign material within the esophagus. There is no evidence of foreign material within the stomach or intestines. There is no evidence of a pneumomediastinum nor aspiration pneumonia.
